We are so excited to start "Blessed Are" with you.
Do you have your book? If not, there is still time to order a PDF downloadable version. Visit www.CentralAZ.com/OnlineStudy to order one.
Take some time today to familiarize yourself with the book. You'll find there are five days of study each week. Four days will include journal prompts and questions, and day five will be a story of someone living out the Beatitudes. You'll also be encouraged to memorize the memory verse each week.
Are you ready to get started? Here we go!
Memory Verse: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven." Matthew 5:3.
Read: The first beatitude Jesus mentions during His Sermon on the Mount, Blessed are the Poor in Spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven, is the foundation for the seven that follow. Therefore, we need to fully comprehend what it means and how to live it. To be poor in spirit simply means to be completely dependent on God. We must rid ourselves of pride and acknowledge we are dependent solely on God for our salvation.
Jesus tells us in Luke 9:23 how to live this out, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me." It is a daily act of surrender to the will of God that will help us remain poor in spirit. When we become poor in spirit we receive the kind of joy that can only come from being with God. It is a glimpse of the Kingdom of heaven here on earth and of what is to come. Being poor in spirit conditions us to surrender all other areas of our life and readies us to live out the other Beatitudes.
Questions for the week:
- In your own words, define poor in spirit.
- In what areas of your life is pride keeping you from being poor in spirit? Spend some time repenting your sins.
- What steps do you plan on taking to remain poor in spirit?
Passages for further study:
Prayer: Father in Heaven, search our hearts and rid us of our sinful desires. Help us to replace our pride with our faith in you. Align our hearts, mind and actions to acknowledge and believe we are bankrupt without you. We pray for your will to be done on Earth as it is in Heaven, amen.
Facebook Contributing Prize! Each week we will draw one name as a recipient of a Starbucks gift card, (hopefully for you to take a friend out and discuss what you're learning in the Beatitudes!) To be entered, simply join in the conversation in our Facebook Group: Blessed Are.
